This Sunday night we were blessed by a message from Daniel Upchurch, one of our younger preachers. Drawing from a heart for the next generation, Daniel delivered a timely and convicting sermon titled “Being a Good Example for Your Children.”
Taking his text from 2 Timothy 1:5, Daniel explored the legacy of faith passed down through generations—from grandmother Lois to mother Eunice, and finally to Timothy himself.
Sermon Highlights
1. The Foundation of Faithfulness
Daniel began by addressing a crisis in modern society: the lack of faithfulness. He noted that we live in a “selfish generation” where vows are easily broken and shacking up has replaced the holiness of marriage.
- Marriage Integrity: A godly parent must be faithful to their spouse. Daniel challenged men to take their vows seriously—”in better or worse, until death”—reminding us that children are always watching how we treat our partners.
- Urgency for Men: Referencing Proverbs 20:6, Daniel asked, “A faithful man, who can find?” He urged young men to strive to be “able men” for the Lord, which begins with faithfulness to the Word of God and the local church.
2. Godly Love vs. Wrathful Discipline
The sermon took a deep dive into the environment of the home. Daniel emphasized that children need to be nurtured in a home filled with godly love, not abusive anger.
- The Balance of Discipline: While discipline is biblical, it must never be done in hate or wrath. Daniel shared a heartbreaking story of a friend who suffered abuse, contrasting it with the biblical mandate to chastise in love to prevent destruction.
- Sacrifice as a Parent: Raising children requires giving up personal hobbies and “party lives.” Daniel shared his personal decision to work at Toyota to ensure his wife could stay home, protecting their children from outside indoctrination.
3. Restoring the Proper Household
Daniel spoke candidly about the roles God established for the home, emphasizing that God is a God of order, not confusion.
- Father as the Head: When a father walks out or fails to lead, the family often falls into chaos. Daniel cited statistics regarding the correlation between fatherless homes and social instability.
- Honor and Submission: Using Ephesians 5, Daniel explained that marriage is symbolic of Christ and the Church. Husbands are called to love their wives as Christ loved the church—acting as the protector, provider, and secure head of the house.
- Contentment over Materialism: He warned against the pursuit of “money, money, money” and the newest iPhones or trucks at the expense of family time and spiritual growth.
What you need is not the newest car; what you need is God. What you need is Jesus. What you need is a Bible. What you need is faith.
A Generational Legacy
Daniel concluded by reflecting on the influence of his own grandfather, Papaw (Pastor Arville Duncan). He spoke of the “spirit” that remains in a home when God is the center. He encouraged every parent and grandparent to realize that children are “heritage of God”—precious gifts that must be watched over, nurtured, and protected from a world that wants to “ship them straight to Rome.”
